1/12/15 Lesson: Finishing My Cover

In this lesson, I finished putting in my cover lines and the little touches like the price and date of the magazine. I still need to add finishing touches and work out the colour of the 'Abbie Aiko'. I will do this once I've completed my contents and DPS.

27/11/15 Lesson: Getting my cover started

I decided to change my masthead as I found it looked slightly more suitable to rock music rather than my genre.

25/11/15 Lesson: Masthead

In the lesson, I used illustrator to create my masthead. At first I was unsure of what design to do and what would look good, however, once I started playing around with the available techniques on the programme, I discovered many unique ways of making my masthead stand out and give it that personal touch.

My Magazine Photoshoot

Today I went into the studio to take photos for my magazine cover and double page spread. I had the help of my assistant Rebecca and my model Abigail. It was a successful shoot and I got very good variety of shots to pick from.

Media Trip 11/11/15

Our media classes got the opportunity to witness a live interview with Anna Smith who is a famous journalist. Writing film reviews is her speciality. Although this was meant to be beneficial to us, I don't feel it was as we're constructing music magazines but the main topic of conversation was about films, which as she said, is very different to the music industry.

Cover Star Feature

As I have recently found out that we are unable to use an actual famous artist as we can't photograph them, I am undecided on who my cover star will be. However, I will portray them as someone similar to someone famous e.g. Jhene Aiko or Tori Kelly. Therefore my article will be based on a persona. My angle will be that there is new album for a new and upcoming artist.

022/1/15 Lesson: Photography

Today in our lesson, we had the privilege of looking at all aspects of photography which consisted of things such as the camera, the backdrop and lighting.

The backdrop can be colours such as black or white. Ideally, for my magazine, I will use a white backdrop which would make my cover star stand out. When using the backdrop, the person has to roughly 5 feet from the backdrop in order to create a 3D effect rather than blending in with the backdrop and looking 2D.

The camera we will be using will be a DSLR camera. 4 settings you have to control when using the camera is, the shutter speed, white balance (which should be set to the flash), ISO (should be roughly 100/200) and aperture.

We will be using Bowens flash kit. There will be 3 lights in the room - soft boxes (which diffuses the light make makes it more natural) and a snoot (which creates a 3D effect on the individual as the light bounces off the hairline).

16/10/15 Lesson: Masthead Practice

In this lesson, 'Illustrator' was introduced to us. I played around with the software, using different colours, fonts and understanding how it works so that when I design my music magazine masthead, I will familiar with it and can apply what I know to make it effective. I also used 'Color Adobe' to experiment different colours and see what colours work well.

My New Name!

After considering the fact that 'Aria' is a long accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio, I decided to change the name of my music magazine as my magazine genre is R'n'B and soul. It took me a while to come up with a new name as you have to look at the meaning, the pronunciation and how effective and appealing it is to your audience. I have come up with the name 'Inflection'. This is the modulation of intonation or pitch in the voice. I love this name as it sounds like 'infection' which can be contagious, similar to my magazine.

Stage 2 - My Magazine Proposal

Content Ideas

House Style: My magazine will have warm colours such as red or orange, as well as a bit of white but nothing too bright. This includes the masthead. I will  use a soft font, nothing too harsh. I want to give a soft and gentle feel to the reader, which portrays the genre in my magazine.

What goes in: My magazine will not only have things about music, but things about fashion as well in order to appeal and interest all audiences.

Features: My magazine will feature famous people such us Musiq Soulchild, Usher, Beyonce, Rihanna, Miguel etc. (soul and R&B artists)

Contents: My contents page will be fairly similar to my cover page, however, it may be in black and white or grey scale to give it an old type of feeling, however, I'm still unsure.

Stage 1 - My Music Magazine Proposal

Title of Magazine: Aria

Genre:
- R&B
- Soul

Target Audience:
- Age = 25 - 30 as older people are more likely to buy a magazine.
- Gender = Males and Females
- Social Grading = B and C1 as these types of people will have money to buy.
- Psychographics = Aspirer and Mainstreamer. Aspirer as these types of people are materialistic and interested in appearance. Mainstreamer as these types of people favour big money brands.

My Music Magazine Name

I have come up with a name for my music magazine by using synonyms for words such as music, melody, tune etc. I have finally found a word that has stood out: Aria. This simply is a long accompanied song for a solo voice.

XXL Magazine Analysis

Vibe Magazine Analysis

Media Kits for Vibe & XXL Magazines

Looking at the statistics for the XXL magazine, I can tell that mostly 25 - 29 year old men purchase this magazine. This is quite shocking as I wouldve thought that mostly 18 - 20 year olds would be interested in these magazines. This is similar to the Vibe magazine as well. Mostly men purchase this magazine and are aged 21+. Both magazines sell to Black/African people who are mostly interested in this magazine, whilst Asians are the least interested in both.
